Thinking about moving from retail to a different area of pharmacy, or vice versa? Considering a
non-traditional Pharm.D. educational program? Pondering the idea of doing a fellowship,
residency or certification program? Whatever you're considering, we have pharmacists who have
been in your shoes and can relate to what you're going through.
Changing areas of pharmacy? There are a few things that should be considered:
Hours: see if the shifts are feasible for you. Some retail/community pharmacist shifts are 10
hours, but they also normally only work 4 days a week. Some night shift pharmacists in retail
and hospital work 7 nights and then are off for 7 nights.
Travel: depending on the position, pharmacists can have no travel or they can have 60% or
more travel involved.
Additional training: some areas of pharmacy require additional training to what was
provided in pharmacy school. Experience in specific areas will sometimes suffice for not
having the standard certifications or training.

Considering Advanced Training?
A non-traditional PharmD is designed for practicing pharmacists with a Bachelor of Science in
Pharmacy from an accredited pharmacy school who are interested in practicing at an
advanced level. Most often these programs are offered with a very flexible schedule and
through online learning, to accommodate the needs of working pharmacists. They also take
less time to complete compared to a traditional PharmD.
Many pharmacists are acquiring advanced training or complimentary degrees after pharmacy
school, to practice in more specialized settings. Some areas of pharmacy also require
additional training to what was provided in pharmacy school. Experience in specific areas will
sometimes suffice for not having the standard certifications or training
